Inglorious Faggots: Syria’s First LGBTQ Military Unit Fighting ISIS

If the Iraqi Army’s recapturing of Mosul couldn’t be more satisfying, it appears Syrian jihadists may soon be crying “The rainbow capes are coming” as Newsweek reports of a group of LGBTQ militants forming to take up arms against the oppressive Islamic State.

Known for their malice towards homosexuality, a crime they consider to be crime worthy of a death sentence often carried out by stoning or a long fall from a roof top, ISIS have found their new resistance in “The Queer Insurrection and Liberation Army” (TQILA) — aptly pronounced “Tequila”, a group comprised of volunteers both foreign and domestic fighting alongside Kurdish forces in northern Syria.

The group has the backing of The International Revolutionary People’s Guerrilla Forces (IRPGF), the anarchist force taking part in the fight against ISIS, having grievances with both the Islamic and Christian conservative views of homosexuality, transgenderism, the new phenomena of “non-binarism”/gender expression and other queer/progressive talking points.

TQILA announced via Twitter: “We, the International Revolutionary People’s Guerrilla Forces (IRPGF) formally announce the formation of The Queer Insurrection and Liberation Army (TQILA), a subgroup of the IRPGF comprised of LGBT*QI+ comrades as well as others who seek to smash the gender binary and advance the women’s revolution as well as the broader gender and sexual revolution.”

The post goes on to continue: “TQILA’s members have watched in horror as fascists and extremist forces around the world have attacked the Queer community and murdered countless of our community members citing that they are ‘ill’, ‘sick’, and ‘unnatural’. “The images of gay men being thrown off roofs and stoned to death by Daesh [Isis] was something we could not idly watch.”

The group seem to express anti-capitalist, anarcho-communist views in their red and black attire, remarkably similar to that of Antifaschistische Aktion (ANTIFA), and their final words of: “Queer liberation! Death to rainbow capitalism! Shoot back! These faggots kill fascists!”

For extra context, ISIS claimed responsibility for the 2016 attack on an LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing 49 innocent people and the jihadist himself.

This seems to be the first time Kurdish forces have shown solidarity for gay rights. They have in the past used all-female units, surely humiliating against jihadist who wish to cover women head to toe in Burqas, and have a generally equal view towards men and women.

The main ISIS stronghold in Syria is the city of Raqqa — a destination currently under siege by a Western-backed coalition of forces that includes Kurdish units.
